Ford to add diesel and EcoBoost engines to F-150 in 2010
by Sam Abuelsamid, Technical Editor

During the unveiling of Ford's new generation of full-size pickup trucks today at the North American Interational Auto Show in Detroit, the company announced that the new F-150 will be getting two new engines in their second year of production.

The F-150 will launch later this year with a choice a three gasoline V-8 engines, including 2 and 3 valve 4.6L units and a 5.4L 3 valve.  In 2010, a new diesel V-8 will be added for the first time in the light duty trucks.  No details have been officially announced although the new diesel is believed to be a 4.4L V-8.

A second new engine in the lineup will be the EcoBoost V-6.  This 3.5L turbocharged and direct injected will eventually be flex-fuel capable.  Ford has not indicated whether that capability will be present at the launch or added later on.  The version of the engine that has been announced for the Lincoln MKS is rated at 340hp and 340lb-ft of torque and is limited by the transverse mounted configuration.  The F-150 will be longitudinally mounted so it could support a higher output.
